The Hugo Sanchez Miracle

The year was 1992. Mexican war correspondents Epigmenio Ibarra and Hernan Vera travelled to former Yugoslavia with the intention of reaching Sarajevo to cover the events of the war in the region for Mexican media.

On their way to Sarajevo, near the Drina River they encountered a group of soldiers who began questioning their intentions, guns aimed at them, fearing they could be spies. The language barrier made things even more difficult for them, as no one seemed to understand a word they were saying.

Fearing the worst, one of the journalists took out his passport and showed it to the soldiers, hoping for the best. The officer’s expression suddenly changed at the sight of his Mexican passport.

“¡Mexicanos, mexicanos! ¡Hugo Sanchez, Fußballspieler!" the officer said.

The soldiers lowered their guns and helped the journalists to the nearest checkpoint so they could continue their journey.

Hugo Sanchez, who gained world fame with his glorious performances with Real Madrid in Spain, winning four "pichichis" as the top-scorer of the Spanish La Liga with the team and setting a league record with 38 goals in the 89/90 season, had saved the lives of two Mexican journalists.
